Call : 07411 448680Ware is a market town in the East Hertfordshire district, sitting on the River Lea just north of Hertford. It has one of the longest histories of any town in the country, with archaeology showing occupation since at least the Mesolithic period, and it has been described as one of the oldest continuously occupied sites in Britain.
The Romans had a sizeable settlement here on Ermine Street, the road running from London to Lincoln. Foundations of several buildings including a temple have been uncovered, along with two cemeteries and a remarkably well-preserved skeleton of a teenage girl.
The town's name comes from the Anglo-Saxon period, when weirs were built across the Lea to impede the boats of invading Vikings. Alfred the Great is said to have defeated the Danes in a battle nearby. By the time of the Domesday Book in 1086, recorded as Waras, Ware was one of the largest towns in Hertfordshire.
Its position on the Old North Road, roughly halfway between London and Cambridge, made it a famous coaching town with a long line of inns. One of those inns, the White Hart, once housed the Great Bed of Ware, reputedly the largest bed ever made in England and dating from around the 1590s. It now sits in the Victoria and Albert Museum, and Shakespeare gave it a mention in Twelfth Night. Chaucer got there first, though, with Roger of Ware appearing as the cook in The Canterbury Tales.
Malt was the making of the town. From the 17th century Ware became England's premier malting centre, turning barley into the brown malt that formed the base of London porter, shipped down the Lea to the capital's brewers. By the late 19th century there were more than 100 malt kilns here, and many of the old maltings still stand along the passageways off the High Street. The Maltmaker statue by Jill Tweed, unveiled in 1999, marks that heritage.
Ware has over 200 listed buildings. The 13th-century priory now serves as town council offices and an events venue, with the 14th-century Grade I parish church of St Mary opposite, known for its elaborate font with large carved stone figures. Place House in Bluecoat Yard is the town's oldest surviving building, an early 14th-century manor house with a crown post roof.
Two features are unique to Ware. A line of 18th-century gazebos, Dutch-style summer houses built in the gardens of former coaching inns, still stands along the riverbank. And Scott's Grotto, created by the Quaker poet John Scott, runs over 65 feet into a chalk hillside through chambers lined with shells, flint, and coloured glass. Grade I listed and restored in 1990, it's regarded as one of the finest grottos in the country.
The New River also begins near here, carrying drinking water from Hertfordshire springs to London since the early 17th century. For drivers, Ware sits on the A10 corridor with rail links on the Hertford East line, and its mix of tight historic streets and fast trunk roads is exactly where a mobile tyre service earns its keep, reaching drivers wherever a puncture or blowout leaves them.
