About Borehamwood

Borehamwood is a town in southern Hertfordshire, about 12 miles from Charing Cross and firmly within the London commuter belt. Home to more than 36,000 people, it sits within the historic parish of Elstree, and the two names are closely intertwined. One of the earliest mentions of the place comes from 1188, when Pope Clement granted the wood of Boreham to the local abbey for the feeding of swine, hence "Bosci de Boreham," the wood of Boreham.

For most of its history this was an area of fields and woodland with a single main road running through it, home to a scattering of houses, a couple of pubs, and a few shops near the railway station. Everything changed when the film industry arrived. The Neptune Film Company opened the first studios in Borehamwood in 1914, drawn by easy rail and road links to London and the clean air away from the capital's notorious "pea souper" smogs.

That single decision made the town's name. Over the following century Borehamwood became home to as many as seven film studios and earned the nickname "the British Hollywood." The studios took their name from the more established Elstree railway station rather than the wood itself, which is why the world knows them as Elstree Studios even though they sit in Borehamwood. The list of films made here is staggering: Star Wars, the Indiana Jones trilogy, Stanley Kubrick's The Shining and 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Dam Busters, and countless others. At one point in the 1980s, six of the ten highest-grossing films of all time had been made at Elstree. Television followed, with EastEnders, The Crown, and Strictly Come Dancing all filmed in the town, and recent blockbusters like Barbie and Wicka continuing the tradition.

Beyond the studios, Borehamwood is a well-connected commuter town. The Elstree and Borehamwood Museum charts its film heritage and local history, while nearby Aldenham Country Park offers green space and reservoir walks. Fast Thameslink trains reach central London in under 25 minutes, and both the A1 and the M25 sit close by. That combination of studio traffic, commuter flow, and major roads on the doorstep is exactly where a mobile tyre service earns its keep, reaching drivers wherever a puncture or blowout leaves them.

Borehamwood Mobile Tyre Fitting FAQ

Which postcodes do you serve?
Borehamwood sits within the WD6 postcode district, which it shares with neighbouring Elstree, and we cover the whole of that area along with parts of the surrounding WD7 toward Radlett. That takes in the town centre and Shenley Road, the studios and business areas, and the residential streets running out toward Aldenham. If you're near the boundary with Radlett, Shenley, or the Greater London line toward Barnet and you're not certain which postcode you fall under, don't worry about it. Just give us your address or a nearby landmark when you call and we'll confirm straight away that we cover you.
I work long hours at the studios. Can you fit my tyres while the car sits in the car park?
Absolutely, and it's one of the most popular ways people in Borehamwood use us. Studio and production work often means long, unpredictable days, so having us come to the car park and fit your tyres while you're on set saves you sorting it in your own time. As long as the vehicle is parked with the wheels accessible and we can get authorised access to the site, we handle the whole job on the spot and settle up afterwards by phone or on completion. Just give us the location and any gate or pass details when you book.
My tyre pressure warning light has come on. Does that mean I need a new tyre?
Not necessarily, but it's worth acting on. A pressure warning can mean anything from a slow puncture to a tyre that's simply lost a little air over cold weather, or occasionally a faulty sensor. The safest move is not to ignore it, since driving on an underinflated tyre wears it unevenly and affects your handling and braking. Give us a call and we can come out, check the pressures and the tyre itself, and tell you honestly whether it needs a repair, a top-up, or a replacement rather than guessing.
Do you fit run-flat tyres, or only standard ones?
We fit both. Plenty of newer cars come with run-flat tyres, which are built to keep going for a short distance after a puncture, and they need fitting with the right equipment to avoid damaging the sidewall. Our fitters are equipped and trained for run-flats as well as standard tyres, so whatever your car came with, we can match it. If you're unsure which type you have, read us the tyre details off the sidewall when you call and we'll confirm and bring the correct stock.
Is it better to replace tyres in pairs or one at a time?
It depends on the state of the others, and we'll give you a straight answer rather than pushing you toward the bigger sale. If one tyre has failed and the rest are recent and in good condition, replacing the single tyre is usually fine. Where the tyres on the same axle are worn or noticeably different in tread, fitting them as a pair keeps your grip and braking balanced left to right, which matters more than most people realise. We'll look at what you've got and recommend only what genuinely makes your car safer.
What if I don't know what tyres my car needs?
That's no problem at all, and it's a common question. Everything we need is printed on the sidewall of your existing tyre, a string like 205/55 R16 91V giving the size, load rating, and speed rating. Read that to us over the phone and we'll bring the right tyre, or an equivalent we'll talk you through. If you can't get to the car to read it, tell us the make, model, and year and we can usually work out the correct specification from there before we set off.
