About Broxbourne

Broxbourne is a commuter town in south-eastern Hertfordshire, sitting beside the River Lea about 17 miles north of London. It lies within the long ribbon of settlement running up the west side of the Lea valley, north of Cheshunt and south of Hoddesdon, with the river forming the boundary with Essex. The town's name comes from Old English meaning "badger stream," and it appears in the Domesday Book of 1086, which also records Broxbourne Mill. In the time of Edward the Confessor the manor was held by Stigand, Archbishop of Canterbury, before passing into Norman hands after the Conquest. King John later granted it to the Knights Hospitaller, and after the Dissolution it went to John Cock, whose family gave their name to Cock Lane.

At the heart of the town stands St Augustine's Church, a Grade I listed building entirely rebuilt in the 15th century, though it keeps a 12th-century Purbeck marble font. Its three-stage tower holds a peal of eight bells, three of them dated 1615, and inside are monuments and brasses spanning four centuries. Broxbourne grew up around inns on the Great Cambridge Road, now the A10, and a number of old houses and inns from the 16th to 19th centuries still line the High Street.
