About Cuffley

Cuffley is a village in the civil parish of Northaw and Cuffley, in the Welwyn Hatfield district of south-east Hertfordshire. It sits between Cheshunt and Potters Bar, about 14 miles north of central London, with a population of roughly 4,300.

The manor of Cuffley, recorded as Coffele in the 13th century, belonged in the 15th century to the office of almoner of St Albans, and in 1540 it was granted to William Cavendish along with the manor of Northaw. For centuries it remained little more than a scattering of cottages, a schoolroom, and Wells Farm.

That farm took its name from the King's Wells nearby. In the days of Charles II these wells enjoyed a considerable reputation, and so many fashionable visitors came to take the waters that the king reputedly sent down a tent for their accommodation.

The village as we know it was really made by the railway. Cuffley station opened in 1910, when the Great Northern Railway extended the line from Enfield Chase as part of the Hertford Loop, and that connection turned quiet farmland into a desirable commuter suburb.

Cuffley's most famous moment came on 3 September 1916. During a First World War bombing raid intended for London, the German airship SL 11 was shot down and crashed here, the first enemy airship destroyed over Britain. Lieutenant William Leefe Robinson, the pilot responsible, was awarded the Victoria Cross, and a memorial to him stands on East Ridgeway.

The craft was actually a Schütte-Lanz army airship rather than a true Zeppelin, though it has been called one ever since. The local football club still carries the nickname "The Zeps" in its honour.

Modern Cuffley is an affluent, well-kept village surrounded by rolling Hertfordshire countryside and woodland. St Andrew's Church, built in 1965 on the site of the old school, replaced the corrugated iron "tin church" put up beside the old village green in 1911. Early village life was recorded by resident Molly Hughes in her memoir A London Family Between the Wars.

For drivers, Cuffley depends on winding country roads linking it to Potters Bar, Northaw, and Cheshunt, with the M25 a short drive south. Those quiet lanes are precisely where a mobile tyre service earns its keep, reaching drivers wherever a puncture or blowout leaves them.

Cuffley Mobile Tyre Fitting FAQ

Which postcodes do you serve?
Cuffley sits within the EN6 postcode district, with Potters Bar as its post town, and we cover the whole of that area including neighbouring Northaw. That takes in Station Road, East Ridgeway, Plough Hill, Northaw Road, and the lanes running out toward Goffs Oak and Newgate Street. If you're near the boundary with Potters Bar, Cheshunt, or Goffs Oak and you're not certain which postcode you fall under, don't worry about it. Just give us your address or a nearby landmark when you call and we'll confirm straight away that we cover you.
Can I buy my own tyres and just pay you to fit them?
We supply and fit as a single service, which works out simpler and usually cheaper for you. Because we buy in volume and don't carry the overheads of a high street garage, the price we quote for the tyre plus fitting is generally better than sourcing one yourself and paying separately for labour. It also means we take responsibility for the whole job, so if there's ever an issue with the tyre, you're dealing with one company rather than being passed between a supplier and a fitter.
My steering wheel vibrates at speed. Is that a tyre problem?
Very often, yes. A wheel that's out of balance is the most common cause of a vibration that appears around 50 to 70mph and eases off again at lower speeds, and it usually means a balance weight has come off or the tyre has worn unevenly. It can also point to a buckled wheel or damage from a pothole or kerb. We balance every wheel we fit as standard, and if you're getting a vibration on tyres fitted elsewhere, we can come out, check the balance, and put it right rather than leaving you guessing.
What happens to my old tyres once you've swapped them?
We take them away with us and dispose of them properly, and that's included in the price rather than added on afterwards. Old tyres can't just go in a skip or a household bin, since there are strict rules about how they're handled, so leaving them with you would only create a problem you'd have to solve. Our fitters load them into the van, and you're left with a clean driveway and nothing to sort out later.
How often should I actually be checking my tyres?
Once a month is a sensible habit, plus before any long journey. Check the pressures when the tyres are cold using the figures in your handbook or on the door frame sticker, since a warm tyre reads higher and throws the number out. While you're down there, look across the tread for uneven wear, run your eye over the sidewalls for cracks or bulges, and check the depth is comfortably above the 1.6mm legal minimum. Most tyre failures give warning signs well before they let go, and a two-minute check catches them.
Do you still come out in bad weather?
We do. Rain, cold, and dark evenings are exactly when tyres tend to give trouble, so a fair-weather service would be no use to anyone. Our fitters work through the year and come prepared for it, and if you're stuck at the roadside in poor conditions we'll treat it as a priority. If the weather makes a particular spot genuinely unsafe to work in, we'll tell you honestly and agree the safest option with you rather than pressing on regardless.
