About Radlett

Radlett is a large, affluent village in the Hertsmere district of Hertfordshire, forming part of the historic civil parish of Aldenham. It sits along Watling Street between St Albans and Borehamwood, roughly 14 miles northwest of central London and just inside the M25.

The village lies in the valley of Tykes Water, a stream running north from Aldenham Reservoir to the River Colne, and it's now entirely surrounded by Metropolitan Green Belt. It's consistently ranked among the wealthiest places in Britain, with streets of substantial detached houses alongside a few rows of Victorian semis and terraces in the older centre.

The name tells you exactly how the place began. Radlett comes from the Old English rad-gelaete, meaning a junction of roads, and the original settlement grew where the old route from Aldenham to Shenley crossed Watling Street. That crossroads is still the heart of the village today.

Romans passed this way for centuries without settling in numbers, hurrying along Watling Street between London and St Albans. They did leave traces though. A potter's kiln was uncovered near Radlett Church in 1898, producing mortaria and coarseware for the Roman capital, and signs of Roman-era clay pits survive near Cobden Hill at the south end of the village.

For most of the medieval period this remained thickly wooded land with scattered farmsteads, and the Domesday survey of 1086 recorded most of the surrounding land as belonging to Westminster Abbey. The first written reference to "Radelet" comes from 1453, with the first parish register listing appearing in 1560.

Modern Radlett really begins in the 1860s, when the parish was created out of the eastern part of Aldenham. A young curate named Thomas Marsden preached in the open air until Christ Church was completed, built near a spot where a small medieval chantry chapel had once stood.

The Midland Railway was the making of the village. Once the line connected Radlett to London, the great estates flanking Watling Street began selling off their land, with Aldenham Lodge released for development in 1910 and the Newberries estate in 1935. Radlett station still sits on the Midland Main Line, about 15 miles from St Pancras.

There's an aviation chapter too. Handley Page opened a grass airfield just north of the village in 1929, upgraded to three hard runways by 1939, where Hampden and Halifax bombers were built during the Second World War, followed by Hastings transport aircraft and Hermes airliners afterwards.

Today, Radlett offers a smart high street, the Radlett Centre with its theatre and library, and Battlers Green Farm on the outskirts with its farm shop and boutique units. Aldenham Country Park sits close by with lakes, trails, and the woodland that inspired the 100 Aker Wood. For drivers, the village depends on Watling Street and the country lanes threading out to Letchmore Heath, Shenley, and Aldenham, which is exactly where a mobile tyre service earns its keep, reaching drivers wherever a puncture or blowout leaves them.

Radlett Mobile Tyre Fitting FAQ

Which postcodes do you serve in Radlett?
Radlett sits within the WD7 postcode district, and we cover the whole village and the surrounding area. That takes in Watling Street, Shenley Hill, Aldenham Road, Loom Lane, and the residential roads around Newberries, along with the outlying hamlets of Letchmore Heath, Patchetts Green, Round Bush, and Aldenham. If you're near the boundary with Borehamwood, Elstree, or Bricket Wood and you're not certain which postcode you fall under, don't worry about it. Just give us your address or a nearby landmark when you call and we'll confirm straight away that we cover you.
Will fitting tyres on my driveway cause any damage to the surface?
No, and we're careful about it. A lot of Radlett homes have block paving, resin, or gravel driveways, so our fitters use proper jacking pads and spread the load rather than pressing a bare jack into a decorative surface. We work cleanly, we take the old tyres away with us, and we leave the driveway as we found it. If you're at all concerned about a particular surface, mention it when you book and we'll talk through the best spot to work on.
Do you fit tyres on prestige cars with large alloys and low-profile tyres?
We do, and it's a common job in Radlett given the sort of cars on the driveways here. Large-diameter alloys and low-profile rubber need careful handling, since a rushed fitting can easily scuff an expensive rim or damage a stiff sidewall. Our fitters use protective equipment on the machine and take the extra time these wheels deserve. Whether it's a performance saloon, a large SUV, or something with run-flats fitted as standard, tell us the tyre details when you call and we'll arrive with the right stock and the right kit.
My car has tyre pressure sensors. Will those need resetting after fitting?
Most modern cars use TPMS sensors mounted inside the wheel, and our fitters are used to working around them without causing damage. Once the new tyres are on and inflated to the correct pressure, the system usually needs resetting or relearning, which on many vehicles happens automatically after a short drive and on others requires a reset through the dashboard menu. We'll set the pressures properly and let you know what your particular car needs, so you're not left staring at a warning light afterwards.
We've got two cars at the house. Can you do both in one visit?
Yes, and it makes good sense to do so. Plenty of Radlett households run more than one vehicle, and having us sort them together saves you arranging two separate appointments. Tell us the tyre sizes for both when you call, along with what each one needs, and we'll come loaded with the right stock for the lot. As long as both cars are accessible at the same address, our fitter works through them in one visit and gives you a single clear price covering everything.
Do you supply winter or all-season tyres as well as standard ones?
We do. All-season tyres suit a lot of drivers around Radlett, since the country lanes out toward Shenley and Letchmore Heath can get slippery in cold, wet weather while the daily commute stays on main roads. Winter and all-season tyres carry the three-peak mountain snowflake marking and use a softer compound with deeper siping, which grips far better once temperatures drop below around 7°C. Give us a call and we'll talk you through whether they're worth it for the driving you actually do.
