About Codiote

Codicote is a village and civil parish in the North Hertfordshire district, tucked into green-belt countryside about 30 miles north of London. Its history runs back at least 1,500 years, with the earliest written record dating to 1002, when King Aethelred sold the manor of "Cuthingcoton" to one of his advisors. The name itself is Saxon, referring to the "cote," or cottage, of a man called Cudda. By the time of the Domesday Book in 1086, the manor was valued at six pounds and owned by St Albans Abbey, which would shape the village for centuries.

The abbey laid out the medieval village deliberately, with narrow burgage plots running back from a market place. The Abbot of St Albans secured a royal charter from Henry II to hold a weekly market in 1267, followed by an annual fair in 1271, and the focus of village life shifted to the market place at the junction of High Street and St Albans Road, a spot still known today as The Hill. The Black Death struck hard in the late 1340s, killing around half the village, and Codicote folk later joined the Peasants' Revolt of 1381, with one local man, Stephen Truebody, executed for his part in it.

The parish church of St Giles, tucked down Bury Lane, has Norman roots and was dedicated between 1108 and 1115. Though largely rebuilt in 1853, it keeps 13th-century work in the nave and aisles and what is thought to be original 12th-century ironwork on the south door. The churchyard holds an unusual "leaping board" grave rail to John Gootheridge, who had to be buried twice after body snatchers dug up and abandoned his corpse. The High Street later became a turnpike road with a popular coaching inn, and in the 19th century the village supported a busy straw-plaiting trade, with local women making plaits for Luton's hat industry.

Today Codicote is a well-kept heritage village of around 3,600 people, dotted with listed buildings and surrounded by outlying hamlets including Driver's End, Nup End, Rabley Heath, and Potters Heath, along with grand houses like The Node and Codicote Lodge. It hosts an annual Village Day and keeps a strong community life. Sitting on the B656 between Hitchin, Welwyn, and Wheathampstead, it depends on country roads that make a mobile tyre service genuinely useful, reaching drivers wherever a puncture or blowout leaves them.

Codicote falls mainly within the SG4 postcode district, with its post town listed as Hitchin, while parts of the parish and its outlying hamlets fall under AL6. Our mobile tyre fitting covers the whole of the SG4 area in and around the village, including High Street, St Albans Road, Heath Lane, and The Hill, as well as the AL6 addresses on the fringes toward Welwyn and Wheathampstead. Whether you're in the village centre or out at Driver's End, Nup End, Rabley Heath, Potters Heath, or Codicote Bottom, we come to you. If you're unsure which side of the postcode boundary you sit on, just give us your address when you call and we'll confirm we cover you.

Codicote Mobile Tyre Fitting FAQ

How much of Codicote and its outlying hamlets do you reach?
All of it, right across the SG4 and AL6 addresses. That takes in the village core along High Street and St Albans Road, up to The Hill, and out to the scattered hamlets like Driver's End, Nup End, Rabley Heath, Potters Heath, and Codicote Bottom. Being a green-belt village, homes here are often set well back down country lanes, which is no obstacle to us. Give us your address or a nearby landmark such as St Giles' Church or the Village Green, and we'll find you without any fuss.
I've broken down on the B656 or a country lane near Codicote. Will you come out?
Yes, and rural roads are very much part of what we do. The B656 through the village and the branch road toward Wheathampstead can be quiet, narrow, and poorly lit, which makes a roadside breakdown feel worse than it is. Pull over as far and as safely as you can, put your hazards on, and call us with your location or the nearest junction or landmark. We'll bring everything needed to sort the tyre where you've stopped, so there's no waiting on a recovery truck to drag you elsewhere.
Can you fit tyres at my home in the village while I get on with the day?
Absolutely, and it's the most popular way Codicote customers use us. Since the nearest tyre centre usually means a drive to Hitchin, Welwyn, or Stevenage, having us come to your driveway saves a real chunk of your day. As long as the car is parked with the wheels accessible, we'll fit, balance, and sort everything on the spot while you work, mind the kids, or simply put the kettle on. Payment is settled afterwards by phone or on completion.
How quickly can you actually get out to Codicote?
Same-day service is the norm, and for emergencies we often reach you within a couple of hours. Because Codicote sits out in the countryside rather than on a motorway, travel time depends on where our nearest fitter is and how the country roads are running that day. Rather than give you a vague window, we'll tell you honestly when we can be there once you call with your location, so you can plan around a realistic arrival time.
Do you handle vans and caravans here, or only cars?
Both, and it's a common request in a rural village like this. We fit tyres on vans up to 3.5 tonnes and on caravans, campervans, and motorhomes throughout Codicote and its surrounds, which suits the local tradespeople working out of vans and the many residents who head off touring in the warmer months. Whether the vehicle sits on your drive, at a farm, or in nearby storage, we arrive with the correct load-rated tyres and fit them properly on site, spare included if you'd like it checked.
Does someone need to stay with the vehicle while you work?
Usually not. As long as the car is somewhere safe with the wheels reachable, we can crack on while you carry on with whatever you're doing and settle up afterwards. The one exception is a roadside job, where we'll need you present for access and safety reasons, particularly on a narrow country lane. Just explain the situation when you book and we'll tell you exactly what's needed, so there are no surprises when we arrive.
